Horticulture

We’ve taken hundreds of pictures of plants, gardens, flowers and farms. Sometimes we bring our usual documentary approach. Other times, we make the subject into an abstraction.
The white Knock-Out® roses pictured above could be considered an abstraction. Although photographed on the bush, we’ve cropped out the surrounding detail and crushed the dark tones to create a photo that could be a painting.
Color and shape define plant pictures. We often pump up the dominant hues and kill off unnecessary colors. Subjects from nature can often be seen as perfectly illustrating classical compositions like the Golden Mean. The trick is to draw the viewer’s eye to the heart of the subject.
We’re not afraid to get our shoes dirty and prefer to approach horticultural subjects in their own environments rather than simulating it in the studio.
