Copyright Basics

Sometimes we get asked about copyright. Here are the basic facts.

Copyright inherently belongs to the author of a work in any medium. You assert your copyright by including the text:

©2007 [your name]. All rights reserved.

Licensing is what other people do to use your copyrighted content. They pay you a fee for the right to use the content under specific circumstances (in N. America, on the web, etc).

You can also investigate a “Creative Commons License” which offers some helpful Web 2.0 tools.

Work for Hire

If you have been hired to create content for someone else, the content belongs to them unless some limitation on teh rights have been negotiated in advance.
